Observances

Apr 1: Observance - Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter. Christians remember it as the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony known as the Eucharist. Jesus also gave the mandate (maundy) at the Last Supper -- "To love one another ".

It's also the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Apr 2: Observance - Good (Holy) Friday

The day on which the death of Christ is remembered. It commemorates the Crucifixion, which is retold from the Gospel according to St. John. Good Friday is a day of mourning in the church. Special services are held for Christians to meditate on Jesus' suffering and death on the cross, and what this means for their faith.

Apr 4: Observance - Easter

Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the most important Christian festival, and the one celebrated with the greatest joy. Jesus homself was seen this day, and for days afterwards by many people. His followers realized that God had raised Jesus from the dead.

Apr 9: Observance - St. Patronage of Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of our blessed Lord was a descendant of King David. This fulfills the prophecy that the Messiah would come from the house of David. In his faithful loving care was entrusted the childhood and youth of the Redeemer of the World.

A model for fathers, Saint Joseph is invoked as a protector of the family. A carpenter by trade, he has been declared the patron saint of all working people, of craftsmen and of the poor.

Apr 19: Observance - St. Alphege

Reportedly born in Weston on the outskirts of Bath, Alphege became a monk early in life. He first entered the monastery of Deerhurst, but then moved to Bath, where he became an anchorite. He was noted for his piety and austerity, and rose to become abbot of Bath Abbey. Alphege was elected Bishop of Winchester in 984 and was largely responsible for the construction of a large organ in the cathedral, audible from over a mile away and said to require more than 24 men to operate. (Wikipedia source)

He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury to die a violent death when he was killed by a raiding army of Danes in 1012 after refusing to allow himself to be ransomed.

Apr 23: Observance - St. George

George was born to a Christian noble family in Lydda, Palestine, during the late third century. Both parents were Christians and from noble families, so this child was raised with Christian beliefs.

George eventually became a beloved imperial guard of Diocletian, Emperor at Nicomedia. However, in the year AD 302, Diocletian (influenced by Galerius) issued an edict that every Christian soldier in the army should be arrested and every other soldier should offer a sacrifice to the Pagan gods. George objected and with the courage of his faith approached the Emperor and loudly renounced the Emperor's edict, and in front of his fellow soldiers and Tribunes he claimed himself to be a Christian and declared his worship of Jesus Christ. Diocletian attempted to convert George, even offering gifts of land, money, and slaves if he made a sacrifice to the pagan gods. The Emperor made many offers, but George never accepted.

Diocletian was left with no choice but to have George excuted for his refusal. Before this happened, however, George gave his wealth to the poor and prepared himself. He was tortured before he was eventually executed by decapitation in April, 303.

Because of St. George's bold and unwavering faith, many Christians heard about him and were encouraged. Many sosngs and poems were written about this martyr. Soldiers, especially, have always been devoted to him.

Apr 25: Observance - St. Mark the Evangelist

Mark is traditionally believed to be the author of the Gospel of Mark, and a companion of Saint Peter.

A number of traditions have built up around Mark, though none can be verified from the New Testament. It is suggested that Mark was one of the servants at the Marriage at Cana who poured out the water that Jesus turned to wine, and also the one who hosted the disciples in his house after the death of Jesus, and into whose house the resurrected Jesus Christ came.

In Egypt, Mark the Evangelist is said to have performed many miracles, and established a church there. It was in Alexandria where Mark met his martyr's death in AD 68.

Apr 30: Observance - St. James the Greater

James is described as one of the first disciples to join Jesus. He is called Saint James the Greater to distinguish him from James, son of Alphaeus, who is also known as James the Less. The Synoptic Gospels state that James and John were with their father by the seashore when Jesus called them to follow him.

James was one of only three apostles whom Jesus selected to bear witness to his Transfiguration. Acts of the Apostles records that Agrippa I had James executed by sword, making him the first of the apostles to be martyred.
