Special Days

Aug 6: Observance - Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ

The Transfiguration of Jesus is an event reported by the Synoptic Gospels in which Jesus is transfigured upon a mountain (Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, Luke 9:28-36). Jesus becomes radiant, speaks with Moses and Elijah, and is called "Son" by God.

The transfiguration put Jesus above Moses and Elijah, the two preeminent figures of Judaism. It also supports his identity as the Son of God. In keeping with the Messianic secret, Jesus tells the witnesses (Saint Peter, James, son of Zebedee and John the Apostle) not to tell others what they saw until He has risen on the third day after His death on the cross.

Aug 10: Observance - St. Laurence - Deacon

Martyred in 258, along with the other six deacons of Rome, and Pope Sixtus II.

He was one of the most popular and powerful saints of the Middle Ages, which accounts for his many patronages. He is the patron of deacons, schoolboys, students, armorers, brewers, confectioners, cooks, cutlers, glaziers, and launderers.

Aug 24: Observance - Saint Bartholomew the Apostle

Bartholomew was a close friend of St. Philip, who brought him to Jesus. Tradition has, that after the Ascension, Bartholomew went on a missionary trip to India, where he left behind a copy of the "Gospel of Matthew".

Along with his fellow apostle, Jude, Bartholomew is reputed to have brought christianity to Armenia in the first century. There is also a tradition that he was martyred in Baku, Azerbaijan, by being flayed alive and then crucified head down.
