Special Days

Nov 2: Observance - All Souls Day

In Western Christianity, All Souls Day commemorates the faithful departed. The custom of setting apart a special day for intercession of the departed is very old, with the first known intercession established by St. Odilo of Cluny (d 1048). Legend has it that a pilgrim returning from the Holy Land was cast by a storm on a desolate island. A hermit living there told him that amid the rocks was a chasm communicating with purgatory, from which perpetually rose the groans of tortured souls. The hermit also claimed he had heard the demons complaining of the efficacy of the prayers of the faithful, and especially the monks of Cluny, in rescuing their victims. Upon returning home, the pilgrim hastened to inform the abbot of Cluny, who then set November 2nd as a day of intercession on the part of his community for all the souls in purgatory.

The theological basis for the feast is the doctrine that the souls which, on departing from the body, are not perfectly cleansed from venial sins, or have not fully atoned for past transgressions, and that the faithful on earth can help them by prayers, and especially by the sacrifice of the Mass. (Note: "Requiem" is Latin for "Rest")

Nov 22: Observance - Thanksgiving

Nov 30: Observance - St. Andrew the Apostle

Andrew, the elder brother of Saint Peter was a disciple of John the Baptist, whose testimony first led him and John the Evangelist to follow Jesus. Andrew at once recognized Jesus as the Messiah, and hastened to introduce Him to his brother, Simon Peter. Both he and his brother were fisherman by trade, hence the tradition that Jesus called them to be his disciples by saying that He will make them "fishers of men."

He is said to have been martyred by crucifixion on an "X-shaped" cross (commonly known as a St. Andrews cross) at his own request, as he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross on which Christ was crucified. Relics which consist of the small finger and part of the top of the cranium of St. Andrew are kept in the Church of St. Andrew at Patras in Achaea in a special tomb, and are reverenced in a special ceremony every November 30th.
